Overcoming Turbulent Emotions
December 8, 2018 @ 7:00 pm – December 22, 2018 @ 11:00 am America/Guatemala
The Union of Mindfulness, Vipassana and Compassion
with Lama Mark Webber
at Villa Sumaya, Lake Atitlan, Guatemala
Please join Lama Mark in December 2018 for an eight day discovery of how turbulent emotions can be overcome through penetrative awareness, called special Vipassana.
Held at Villa Sumaya in the tropical region of Lake Atilan, the retreat is surrounded by three volcanos, open big sky and water views.
Utilizing classic teachings and practices of Abhidharma, Vipassana and Dzogchen, we will learn about how the mind settles, with active compassion, then learn to clearly experience afflictive states as an arising—but know it is none other than the nature of our innate luminous clear mind.
Discovering that all our afflictive states and confusion are none other than the energy display of the mind—and ultimately pure—is a momentous discovery. The discovery is infinite compassion and profoundly freeing. Though hidden for a time, innate purity of awareness is what we have all day and night. It is as close as our nose. We just have to listen, study, reflect and meditate to see it. We can all discover this ever present primordial awake mind and gain confidence by practice. Lama Mark will give descriptions of the differences between tranquility, mindfulness and Insight (Vipassana) meditation, special Vipassana and the Buddhist stages of liberation, freedom and great compassion.
The teachings and practices:
1) Setting forth a profound intention: the importance of preliminary and concluding practices and contemplations,
2) Introducing relative and ultimate bodhicitta (Enlightenment mind)-relative and ultimate compassion—a transmission and explanation of The Thirty-Seven Things that Bodhisattvas Do, by Thogme-Zangpo,
3) Calming the mind by attention to breath sensation and utilizing body movements,
4) Practicing the Seven Factors of Enlightenment,
5) Merging the intention of bodhicitta with a full mindfulness practice
6) Practicing drawing images on water (Vipassana with support)
7) The Vajrasattva meditation, a practice by Terton Mebar Rinchen Phuntsog (16th cent.) to reveal the innate purity of mind.
There will be opportunities for interviews with the teacher.
